Multi-family office

A multi-family office is not a nicer brokerage account. It is the person and the infrastructure that keep tax, estate, investment, and operating-company decisions from living in separate inboxes.

What is a multi-family office and who is it for?

A single-family office exists for one family. A multi-family office (MFO) serves several families on a shared platform: planning, investment implementation, reporting, and specialist coordination. You need one when complexity is the constraint, not when a product pitch says you do. A founder with one operating company, a concentrated stock position, and a cross-border parent is often a better fit than a larger account with a simple balance sheet.

Clexperus Capital & Wealth Advisory is an independent multi-family office based in Aventura, Florida, advising founders, business owners, executives, and globally connected families on liquidity events, tax and estate design, concentrated equity, and private markets. Maria Dontsis, MBA, CFP®, CPWA®, CDFA®, is Founder & Principal. The firm is deliberately small. Institutional custody, clearing, and supervision sit with A.G.P./Alliance Global Partners.

What is the typical minimum for a multi-family office?

There is no universal industry minimum. Published US entry points we have seen range from roughly $10 million investable to $75 million-plus of total net worth, often clustering around $20 million to $30 million, and they track service model and capacity more than a round number. Clexperus does not publish a firm minimum. Fit is complexity, coordination load, and whether we can actually do the work well, not a cutoff on a website.

What we do inside that model

  • Hold the whole picture across entities, countries, and advisers.
  • Implement public-market portfolios with tax in the design, not as an afterthought.
  • Underwrite private markets before they are offered, including the fee stack and the liquidity terms.
  • Act as a US outpost for international families who already have a home-country office.

Multi-family office or private bank?

A private bank is built around custody, credit, and the balance sheet of the institution. An MFO is built around coordination. You can have excellent banking and still be the only person who knows what the trust actually holds. Fees, product incentives, and who sits in the room are different. Many families use both. The question is who owns the plan.

How much should a family allocate to private markets?

Start from liquidity needs, not from a target percentage. Commitment pacing is not the same as a stated allocation. Illiquidity costs the most in a year you need cash for tax, a capital call, or a family event. Semi-liquid is not liquid. Read the tender-offer caps and gates before you treat an evergreen vehicle like a mutual fund.

How do multi-family office fees compare?

Some MFOs bill a retainer. Some bill a percentage of assets. Some unbundle planning from investments. A 1% AUM relationship can be cheaper or more expensive than an MFO once you add what is billed separately: tax work, estate projects, alternatives, and reporting. Compare the stack, not the headline rate.

Who handles cross-border planning for global families?

US tax, home-country tax, and estate reporting are three problems. We coordinate the US side with your existing counsel and CPA, including families who are not US persons but hold US assets. The next transaction is usually the wrong time to discover a reporting gap.

If the question is whether an MFO is the right container, a conversation beats a brochure.
